Micas – Malta International Contemporary Art Space – is a newly established institution that aims to become a proactive player within the international contemporary art landscape. Its mission is to energize Malta’s cultural ecology while fostering dialogue and impact across the wider Euro-Mediterranean region.
Formafantasma has been invited to design the entrance hall and the shop of the new building, conceiving these spaces as an intimate and welcoming threshold between the public realm and the institution’s curatorial vision.
Materials such as stone and textiles draw from local architectural traditions and cultural memory, while the presence of windows connecting the entrance hall and the shop subtly references the iconic Maltese balconies. In contrast, the use of stainless steel provides a functionality and a contemporary language.
