Reading Room

Stockholm Furniture Fair, 2024

As Guest of Honour 2024 for the Stockholm Furniture Fair, Formafantasma creates an installation where transformative knowledge, ideas, and visions for the future take center stage. The installation Reading Room invites visitors to a calm space where to sit, read and reflect on the ideas that have shaped Formafantasma’s work.

Reading Room offers a curated selection of books outlining the environmental concerns shaping Formafantasma’s projects, alongside a display of recent video works by the studio. The aim of the installation is to allow visitors to engage with ecology not only on a product level, but also on a systemic one.

The showcased furniture resulting from a recent collaboration with Artek, is a testament on how the production of furniture can be re-conceived from an ecological perspective. This joint effort exemplifies a way of working beyond product design, that fosters conversations about material sourcing and production.

Reading Room is also an example of how temporary installations can be conceived with a minimum usage of resources while considering the afterlife of each element as part of the design process. At the end of the fair, all books are donated to design schools to become part of their library, all materials and furnitures are either re-sold or donated to local partners.
