To My Ships, 2023

To My Ships¹ is a newly launched personal care brand founded by Daniel Bense, with a mission to incorporate natural ingredients and fine fragrances often overlooked by the industry.
Our collaboration with To My Ships is a multifaceted, integrated process that draws from our past experiences with commercial companies and our research work with cultural institutions. To My Ships aimed to establish a long-term relationship with the studio that involved a thorough process of reviewing, confirming, or vetoing decisions, all while interpreting them through an ecological lens.

In the personal care industry, design is often used to create desire. At To My Ships, desirability naturally follows from product quality. The principles of discretion, silence, and responsibility guided this process and will continue to influence other material manifestations of the brand. Our future focus will be on the sustainable development of packaging, logistics, events, presentations, store design, and communication.
During the first phase our initial focus was on the brand's materiality, particularly reflected in the vessels.

Most of the design is subtly integrated, almost invisible at first glance. The decision to use aluminum bottles was based on intuition and validated through comparisons with glass and plastic. Aluminum strikes a balance in terms of lightness, adaptability, and ease of recycling. Not all aluminum is equal, though. Recycled aluminum saves up to 95% of the energy compared to primary aluminum, making it the obvious choice. We prioritized post-consumer recycled aluminum over post-industrial (pre-consumer) aluminum because the latter is not truly recycled, as it comes from leftover materials in the production process, retaining the original production's carbon footprint.
To My Ships aluminum bottles are made from 100% post-consumer recycled aluminum.
№ 2.2.27.17 – Detail of the bottle
Each vessel was designed after a comprehensive exploration of the European industry and manufacturing processes. Our main priorities were post-consumer recycled aluminum for the bottles and PCR plastic for the caps and components. In this industry, selecting ready-made, efficiently produced, and recycled components was critical. The bottles are ready-made models with minimal modifications to reduce additional energy consumption and pollution.

A critical, though invisible, design choice was the bottle format. We discovered through discussions with manufacturers that a taller and slimmer bottle design at the same volume uses less aluminum. While this adjustment might only shave off grams per bottle, it results in significant material savings — up to 10% — in large-scale production.
